Settling to Earth
Friday, July 20, 7 to 9 p.m.

Poetry reading and book signing with author Meredith Devney Mullins.

Settling Into Earth is a coming-of-age sketch, one of people and place.  It is a snapshot of life — of the characters we meet, the towns we call home, the subtle complexities we face– the stirring and settling, the digging and replanting.

Mullins takes us through suburban, rural and urban locales to consider the universality of family relationships, gender roles, the ache of growing and loving.  This is poetry that doesn’t shy away: it shifts through restlessness only to root itself in its beauty.

AtLee-Wordsongs_Herd-WEBIn honor of George Ella Lyon’s poem, “Where I’m From,” the Scott County Arts Consortium is participating in the  “Where I’m From”:  A Poetry of Place  initiative of the Kentucky Arts Council by hosting an evening of WordSongs — an evening to share our community’s original  “Where I’m From”  poems on Monday, March 7 at 6 pm.

We encourage you to write your own  “Where I’m From”  poem and bring it along to read out loud–or simply attend the event as a listener. We will hear one another’s stories and encourage the voices of our local community. Those who want to join us for refreshments before the readings can gather at 5:30 pm.

From the Kentucky Arts Council website:

“Create a memory poem to share with your family, friends, community and the state.

Kentucky’s “Where I’m From”: A Poetry of Place explores the Commonwealth through memory poems written by those of us who live here. Don’t panic—a memory poem isn’t as difficult as you may think. A “Where I’m From” memory poem is simply a list of what’s important to you.

Kentucky Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon wrote “Where I’m From” as a list of people, places and things that were important to her during her childhood. The popular poem is used all over the world as a template for others to write their own memories. Schools, businesses and gatherings of all kinds have found that creating and sharing “Where I’m From” poems is a great way for people to become acquainted.”

March 1 through March 31, 2013:  “Digital Vision: Computers as Media”

“Opening Reception” Friday March 1,  7-9 p.m. Welcome the artists and the award winners of the emerging artists juried selections

“Afternoon with the Artists” Saturday March 2, 1-2 p.m. Gallery talk / Questions and answers

Digital Vision: Computers as Media: Exhibit coordinator Bruce Frank invited professional artists Phil Bloomfield, John Stephen Hockensmith, Darrell Kincer, Michael Levin, Fred Reaves, and Arturo Alonzo Sandoval who also served as jurors for the “Top 30 Emerging Artists” ranking the top 10 selections for sponsored awards and certificates of merit.   You will have two opportunities to meet and speak with the featured artists about their insights and techniques of visual expression.  Robert “Bruce” Frank, a well established professional artist from Scott County has participated in exhibitions at the Scott County Arts & Cultural Center since it opened December 2006.  In this exhibit he provides outstanding examples of “digital visions”, melding his own photography of natural subjects through the use of computer software.  He is generous with his time to help new artists learn and grow, so we are fortunate he offered to coordinate this outstanding exhibition of professional artists who use computers to create – and emerging artists new to the spotlight of gallery exhibitions.

This event of invited professional artists includes a juried exhibition of emerging artists  bringing in 71 entries from Elkhorn Crossing School, Georgetown College, University of Kentucky, Spencerian College, Bluegrass Community Technical College, and individuals age 25 and younger.

“If available in his day, would Picasso have used a personal computer and graphics tablet to create his art, or Ansel Adams used Photoshop as his digital darkroom? In my estimation they would have embraced the digital format, if only because artists constantly strive to perfect their craft using the all available tools at their disposal.

From my perspective, working with computer hardware and software allows me to explore endless variations of color and composition, combining images instantly and with precision, until the final result coalesces to become my vision.

The artists in this exhibit have all used computer processes in multiple and extraordinary ways.  Computers are a constantly evolving contemporary media that will continue to expand the creative horizons of artists for generations.”

— Bruce Frank, exhibit coordinator

The Juried exhibit of Emerging Artists:

” A key purpose of this exhibit is to give young artists under 25, who may not have done so previously, the opportunity to be involved in a gallery exhibit, and to open their eyes to the possibility of becoming a professional artist, along with all that entails. Presentation, pricing, and developing an artist’s statement are all part of the process. In my opinion, the young artists in this show have all risen to the occasion, and exceeded my already high expectations by way of their enthusiastic participation and creative thinking. “

— Bruce Frank, exhibit coordinator

The American Academy of Equine Art, Inc. was established in 1980 by a group of ten distinguished artists, individually famed for their work on equine subjects. Their aim was to maintain a degree of excellence within the genre, and to promote the academic representation of the equine form in drawing, painting and sculpture. Loosely based on the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the AAEA serves to educate and encourage a broad awareness and appreciation of contemporary equine art as a specific and distinctively worthy segment of fine art in America.

In fulfillment of its mission, the AAEA organizes and presents exhibitions throughout the United States. An annual exhibition features works of Founders, Full members and invited artists. A yearly, open, juried exhibition spotlights the works of aspiring or emerging equine artists. Each year, the Academy sponsors workshops in equine drawing, painting and sculpture in Kentucky and other locations in the USA. March 25-April 29, 2012:    “ENSŌ  Tapestries Photography Poems”

DOBREE ADAMS & JONATHAN GREENE

Dobree Adams and Jonathan Greene are welcomed to the Georgetown, Scott County Arts & Cultural Center March 25 through April 29 with their exhibition “ENSŌ  Tapestries Photography Poems”.

The exhibition will open on Sunday, March 25, with a reception for the artists from 3:00 until 5:00 p. m. at the arts center which is located adjacent to the historic 1890’s jail at 117 North Water Street. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Mary Bailey Fitts Van Meter, a high school classmate of Dobree Adams.
Weaver/photographer Dobree Adams and poet/publisher/book designer Jonathan Greene have forged a unique multifaceted collaboration of vision and voice from their separate worlds, their life together on a Kentucky River farm north of Frankfort, their travels and their common interests.

Dobree Adams, long recognized as one of Kentucky’s finest contemporary fiber artists and represented by Capital Gallery in Frankfort and New Editions Gallery in Lexington, is also an accomplished photographer. The impressionistic influences of color and light in her tapestries relate to the intimate landscapes in her photographs in subtle and mysterious ways.

This collection of her work, which was inspired by travels in Japan and by design aesthetics which are an inherent part of Japanese culture as well as guiding principles for the traditions of Japanese art and craft, includes three new large tapestries as well as a large number of new photographs.
On Sunday, April 1, Jonathan Greene will give remarks and a reading, Asian Influences in American Poetry, at the gallery at 4 p. m. Meet Jonathan at the Yuko-En Japanese Garden in Georgetown at 2 p. m. to walk the friendship paths before his presentation at the Arts & Cultural Center.
Jonathan Greene, the author of more than 30 books including the recently published collection of poems Distillations & Siphonings from Broadstone Books in Frankfort, is also recognized as the publisher of Gnomon Press and as a typographer and award-winning book designer. His poems are heavily influenced by Asian poetry and Buddhist thought. They provide another dimension to this exhibition, evidence of the intertwining of the voice and vision of these two artists and their shared life on a Kentucky river bottom.
April 15 and 29 Dobree will offer a workshop “ON SEEING”, photography and bookmaking, beginning at the Yuko En Garden will explore lines and contours, the impact of color, and the effect of light…Come learn to see differently and then compose your own book with images of your new sight. Call the Arts & Cultural Center for details.

May Events:   Folk Art of the Region

We are thrilled to present Folk Art of the Region: Art of the Soul, a three tier exhibit that includes Made to be Played: Traditional Art of Kentucky Luthiers (instrument makers); The Folk Art of the Coopers: Jessie & Ronald – Paintings & Sculpture; and Folk Art in Kentucky & Kentucky Traditional Music – a hands on display from the Kentucky Folk Art Center.

Made to be Played: Traditional Art of Kentucky Luthiers is the result of field work conducted by the Kentucky Folklife Program, an interagency program of the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Historical Society, sponsors of this portion of the exhibit. Original funding was provided in 2007 by a National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces grant. The exhibit has toured the Commonwealth through funding provided by The Kentucky Arts Council and will end its long run this year.

The exhibit highlights the creative talents of master luthiers in making and repairing guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers and other original stringed instruments. The elaborate displays include a workshop of Homer Ledford master luthier, craftsman, instrument inventor and musician. Other featured artists include Roy Bowen, Scott Leedy, Gary Cornett, Cathy Currier, Bryan England, Arthur Hatfield, Neil Kendrick Donna Lamb, Lewis Lamb, Warren A. May, Art Mize, Douglas Naselroad, Frank Neat, Frank Pittman and Jimmy Robertson. The Art & Cultural Center is the fortunate benefactor of this wonderful exhibit.

Folk Art of the Coopers: Jessie & Ronald – Paintings & Sculptures, demonstrates the breath and depth of Kentucky’s legendary folk artists. The Coopers have been making art for decades and are internationally known. The pieces in the exhibit represent art on loan from the artists and their extended family. Their work, complex and intricate, represents the soul of the Southern Folk Art tradition.

The third tier of this exciting exhibit is a hands on display of The Folk Art Tradition in Kentucky and The Sound of Kentucky Traditional Music from the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Moorehead. The KFAC houses a great collection of regional folk art and serves the Commonwealth by circulating these displays to schools, libraries, community centers and cultural centers. Along with the displays are audio/visual materials created to enhance a visitors experience in the gallery.
